Location + brief + development

I am designing an extension for East Ham library. It will include a children's area and an upstairs club/activity lounge.  From my recent visits to the library, I have found that everything was packed together and the library required a lot more space.

Extending from my previous model,  I used a more three dimensional approach and cleaned up the number of triangles. This block like effect is very similar to brutalist architecture. It offers a sense of compactness and follows the same random impact as crystals.

 

Daniel Libeskind, Dresden’s Military History MuseumLibeskind’s dramatic and heavy extension to the 135 year old building unbalances the symmetry of the original structure. The clear, harsh glass exposes light through and creates an openness to the museums previous closed off, cold vibe. The extension brings the museum into a new style of architecture, attracting a wider range of people. The contrast that the new extension creates changes the appearance of the building all together, it is as though a giant bomb has hit the museum itself, this reflects on the fact that it is a museum of military history so suiting the purpose well. Libeskind’s  obvious inspiration from crystals is something that I would like to use for my own design as the forms of a crystal are unpredictable and always different.
